A construction permit has been issued for the planned railway bridge over the Neris River near Jonava. It will be the most complex Rail Baltica engineering facility and the longest railway bridge in the Baltic States.
“We are pleased that the procedures for issuing construction permits have been completed smoothly, and this is another positive step confirming the continuous progress of the Rail Baltica Global Project. Furthermore, the winner of tender for the construction of Rail Baltica bridge across the Neris will be announced soon,” explains Marius Narmontas, Head of the Lithuanian Branch of RB Rail. “Neris bridge will not only be the longest construction in Baltics, reaching even 1510 meters, but it also won’t have any supporting constructions in the water, which means that the construction contractor will need to apply the most modern construction technologies.”
Distance between the support constructions on the Neris bridge will reach 150 meters. The new bridge will be a part of a completely new 1,435 mm width gauge railway stretch for Rail Baltica between Kaunas and the Lithuanian-Latvian border.
Rail Baltica is a greenfield rail transport infrastructure project with a goal to integrate the Baltic States in the European rail network. It is currently one of the biggest investments in improving mobility and travel opportunities as well as developing business, trade, tourism, and the exchange of goods in the region. It is the largest railroad infrastructure project to be constructed in the Baltic countries in the last hundred years.
The combined length of the Rail Baltica railway line in the Baltic States will reach 870 km: 392 km in Lithuania, 265 km in Latvia, and 213 km in Estonia. The total estimated construction cost of the project is approximately 5.8 billion euros.
