Rail Baltica is a railway infrastructure megaproject that spans across several countries. The depth of skills and expertise required to successfully execute a greenfield project of this caliber is extensive and would not be possible without our diverse team of professionals.
Welcome back to our series, “Rail Baltica: The People Behind the Vision,” where we introduce you to the members of the Rail Baltica global project team. These individuals are the driving force advancing the Rail Baltica project with their professionalism, dedication, and passion for this project.
Aiga Benfelde, Procurement Manager and Deputy Head of Procurement
When did you join the Rail Baltica project and what inspired you to become a part of the team?
I joined Rail Baltica at the end of 2018. The magnitude and importance of the project were the main inspiration to join the team.
What does your job involve?
Preparation and review of procurement documents, setting the best strategy for particular procurement, following up on the timeline, and leading the procurement commissions.
How has your role evolved since you first joined the Rail Baltica project, and what have you learned along the way?
From year to year, the scope and estimated values of the procurements have increased significantly, as well as the complexity. I guess the main conclusion is that regardless of the size or complexity of the procurement, you have to execute your duties in good conscience, and this will be one of the key elements for successful delivery.
What does the Rail Baltica project mean to you?
As I’ve been in the project for almost 6 years, I would describe it as a lifestyle, a way of thinking, a path…
What do you believe is the most challenging aspect of this mega project?
To meet all three main goals – budget, time, quality.
What specific contribution or skill do you believe you bring to the Rail Baltica project team that sets you apart from others?
Focus on key items, resilience.
What hobbies, interests, or talents do you have?
I love travelling. Also, I enjoy attending different concerts, theaters, and operas. In winter, I love alpine skiing.
What is it about the rail industry that you love?
I see it as the backbone of the transport infrastructure of any state.
What would you say is the achievement you are most proud of?
I’m very proud and happy that, together with my team, we have built great relationships where we can trust each other and always be sure we will support each other if needed.
Do you think women handle leadership roles differently than men?
I think yes, we bring a bit more sensitivity and pedantry to the process, I would say.
