Executives from Tyréns, one of Sweden’s largest design companies, and its Lithuanian branch have visited the Rail Baltica construction sites. The meeting with representatives of LTG Infra, the company implementing Rail Baltica in Lithuania, have discussed the ongoing and planned works. LTG Infra is currently focusing on securing design capacity and invites both Lithuanian and international design companies to work in Lithuania and contribute to the Rail Baltica project.
According to Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra, one of the biggest challenges for Rail Baltica now is to secure design resources for the planning of future high-speed railway sections.
“Designing a high-speed railway in the Baltic region, which has no prior experience in the field, is a challenge. We are addressing it by partnering with international experts, strengthening in-house competencies within LTG Group, and proactively attracting specialists from around the world. This will allow us to develop the project faster and ensure its implementation”, said Mr Žalimas.
According to Audrius Bunevičius, CEO of Tyrens Lietuva, the engineering and design consultancy Tyréns Group has so far mainly worked in the Swedish and UK markets.
“With Lithuania’s economic growth and huge investments in infrastructure projects, we can see that cooperation is needed in another direction as well. While Tyrens Lietuva is the largest design services company in the country, having the largest number of road, bridge and rail experts, it is still not enough to execute large-scale projects. To maintain our high standards of quality and punctuality, we have joined forces with our Swedish colleagues, drawing on their qualifications and experience, and we are successfully meeting our clients’ expectations in providing engineering design services,” said Bunevičius.
Tyrens Lietuva carries out the preparation and implementation work of projects on land acquisition for public needs in the Rail Baltica project sections at Kaunas node and Panevėžys node, and together with Atamis, land acquisition work for Rail Baltica infrastructure maintenance depots in Kaunas and Panevėžys.
In 2024, most of the special plans for the Kaunas and Panevėžys nodes, the section from Poland to Jiesia, were approved, and the special plan for the Kaunas-Vilnius section is expected to be finalised in the near future.
The preparation of the special plans allows launching the design activities, with the selection of designers and the start of design work in Lithuania planned for 2025. One of the most important sections to be designed is that from Kaunas to the Lithuanian-Polish border. It is also planned to launch design tenders for regional stations and infrastructure maintenance depots, and to continue design work on the Kaunas-Lithuania-Latvia border.
